Ultrasound is a diagnostic imaging tool that allows for the evaluation of internal organs in real time in a non-invasive manner. Organ architecture, size and shape of healthy and diseased tissues can be evaluated.
Common indications include:
Ultrasound also allows for precise, image-guided, targeted sampling of body cavity fluid as well as aspirates and biopsies of organs and tissues to facilitate patient diagnosis/treatment.
Ultrasound units currently in use at TUCVM include Samsung Prestige R85, Aplio 500, GE Logiq, Sonosite II and Butterfly iQ handheld. In addition to abdominal examination, a combination of various transducers/machines allows examination of musculoskeletal system and other small body parts (such as thyroid gland). High resolution images with Doppler Examination can also be obtained using these machines.
Radiography and ultrasound are complementary imaging modalities. Radiography provides invaluable information about the entire body cavity assessed, including bones and areas such as the pelvic canal that cannot be adequately evaluated with ultrasound. It is important that ultrasound and radiography are used in conjunction with one another to provide the best possible diagnostic accuracy and patient care.
