Welcome to the Tuskegee University Veterinary Teaching Hospital where we provide the highest quality veterinary care and serve as both a referral hospital and a community practice for Alabama and surrounding states. The hospital is staffed by board-certified specialists and experienced faculty who work together using a team-based approach to patient care.

Strong partnerships with referring veterinarians help ensure the best possible care for patients and their owners. Complex cases requiring advanced diagnostics, imaging, or treatment are referred to the hospital, giving animals access to the latest research, clinical trials, and treatment options.

How to Schedule an Appointment

When scheduling an appointment at the VTH, please be prepared to provide the following information:

  • Owner’s name
  •  Telephone numbers and email addresses
  •  Patient species, breed, age, sex, color
  •  Presenting complaint or patient problem
  •  Has your pet been seen by a veterinarian for this problem?
  •  Name of your veterinarian or clinic
  •  Does your animal have a current rabies vaccination?

Urgent Appointments

For urgent referrals, please call us directly at 334-727-8436/8437. We will provide a prompt and definite answer regarding same-day availability. Our goal is to avoid delays and ensure timely care.

  • For non-urgent appointments, we typically reach out to the pet owner directly with scheduling details.
  • In some cases, it may not be in the patient’s best interest to complete all diagnostics or procedures in a single day. This may require overnight hospitalization or a return visit for specific treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I arrive for my scheduled appointment, and what should I bring?

  • Returning clients: Please arrive 15 minutes early.
  • New clients: Please arrive 30 minutes early to complete necessary paperwork.

Arriving early helps us provide timely and thorough care for your animal.

What to bring:

  • Copies of your animal’s medical records, recent test results, and vaccination history
  • Proof of rabies vaccination (required)
  • A list of current medications your animal is taking
  • Videos or pictures of any current medical issue

Safety guidelines:

  • All dogs must be on a leash in the entrance and reception area
  • All cats and small exotic animals must be in a secure carrier

Can my animal eat the day of the appointment?

Yes. Please continue your pet’s regular food, water, and medication schedule unless otherwise instructed. If unsure, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Who will examine my animal?

Your animal will be examined by a faculty veterinarian and senior veterinary students. As a teaching hospital, students participate in all aspects of care under the direct supervision of a licensed faculty veterinarian.

How do I make an appointment? Is a referral required?

Referrals from local veterinarians are welcome but not required. Providing medical records and recent test results helps us better understand your animal’s condition.

What happens if my animal needs to be hospitalized?

If hospitalization is recommended, your animal may be admitted immediately following the appointment. We will inform you in advance whenever possible.

During hospitalization:

  • A senior veterinary student will provide daily updates on your pet’s condition and invoice status
  • You are welcome to visit your pet by arranging a time with a veterinary student or clinician on your pet’s medical team.

Our Veterinary Teaching Hospital Mobile Unit is used to provide preventative care inclusive of routine veterinary examination and consultations, vaccinations, parasite control to underserved communities throughout Alabama.
