The Tuskegee University Small Animal Emergency and Intensive Care Service provides emergency care for small animal patients during regular business hours, Monday through Friday. Care is delivered by small animal rotating interns and senior clinical veterinary students under the direct supervision of a board-certified specialist in Small Animal Emergency and Critical Care (DACVECC).

In-hospital care (ICU or Intermediate Care) is provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week by rotating faculty veterinarians and the clinical veterinary students.

  • Complete Blood Counts (CBC)
  • Serum chemistry panels
  • Urinalysis
  • Coagulation testing
  • Blood gas analysis (EPOC)

Procedures & Therapies

  • Vascular and urinary catheterization:
  • Intravenous fluid therapy
  • Transfusion medicine:
    • Whole blood (On a need and supply basis only)
    • Plasma products

Nutritional & Supportive Care

  • Enteral (tube feeding) nutrition

Collaborative & Educational Services

  • Ongoing collaboration with Internal Medicine and Surgery services
  • Over-the-phone consultation with regional veterinarians during service hours
  • Clinical training opportunities for veterinary students, interns, and visiting veterinarians

Client Communication

  • Regular updates regarding patient status and response to therapy
  • Clear communication regarding diagnostic and treatment plans, including anticipated costs

  • Emergency receiving and stabilization during regular business hours (Monday–Friday). In-hospital care (ICU or Intermediate Care) is provided 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Continuous patient monitoring, treatments, and necessary interventions while hospitalized
  • Advanced pain management and critical care support

After-Hours Coverage
Emergency services are not provided outside of regular business hours. Patients requiring emergency care during evenings, overnight hours, weekends, or university holidays are referred to nearby emergency and specialty hospitals to ensure continuity of care and appropriate medical/surgical support.
